If you want to test your knowledge of a certain academic field, then UIL is the place to be, with its vast collection of events to choose from. This collection can range from theatre, social studies, maths, and literature. Whilst you do compete against other students, Junior Vanessa Cervantes Rosales said that it’s not as difficult as it sounds and suggests that, “you should just have fun with it”. She states that GHS makes UIL a lovely experience and that all the teachers who host are all very nice. Also stated that,”[It] is the most exciting time of the year for me”. Lawson Marin, a Senior at GHS, put it differently stating that, “it was brutal but worth it”. He also said that it “was interesting learning about the 1920s (the subject of Social Studies last year) and was pretty fun competing”. Junior Emma Herpeche said that she “[does] UIL for History and [that] it’s really fun”, also putting that “if [UIL] is something you want to do, [then] you should try it”.
It is to be noted though, that not everyone shares the same opinions about UIL. Like Junior Colter Ray Johnson who said that he had “lost interest because it was too easy” for him. He also stated that he wishes to give most of his efforts to sports, which also highlights that UIL may not be for everyone.
The head of UIL here at GHS, Ms.Pippin, says she thinks UIL is very beneficial for students who want to compete in an activity that isn’t sports. If interested in competing in one of the many events, then you will need to get into contact with Ms.Pippin. It is also worth mentioning that UIL is something that will look good on your college/uni. applications. If on the edge though then take it as Ms.Pippin put it simply, “Everyone should try it”.
