Student Council at Graham High School is a large program. It has more than 100 student participants involved. About every high school in the United States has a student council program. What is Student Council though? The definition from the Definitions of Oxford Languages says that Student Council is “a group of students elected by their peers to address issues of concerns and organize student events and activities.” Here at Graham High School we do have a group of elected officers for the program but also a large number of participating members.
Now you know about what Student Council is, but what separates StuCo from any other school groups at the school? The sponsor and faculty member over Student Council, SaraJo Carrico, says “Student Council is all about Graham High School students. This program is focused on unity for the school”. While groups at our school like Youth Lead and Key Club are more focused on the school and the community, StuCo focuses on the inner workings of the school alone.
Sara Peyton Dospapas, the Communications Officer for Student Council, says “StuCo’s goal is to build a better school and teach the students how to be leaders. They will go out into the community themselves as leaders but it all starts here at the school in this program”.
Student Council is awesome. Lawson Marin, the Vice President of Student Council, says “The school is improved by Stuco. We really try to bring our students school spirit and involvement. We overall want our student’s high school experience to be fun”.
And being in this program definitely is fun. Not only do they do a haunted house during the halloween season and do events with the elementary kids but they even take fun field trips each year.
Veyounka Aranda, a Stuco member, says “I love StuCo! I get to work with my friends, show support for the school, and help those in need!”. And Abbie Smith says “Being in StuCo lets me be better involved with my school. It’s so fun!”.
I think Student Council is a great program. You know now what it is all about and what people think of it! If you are ever interested in joining Student Council, reach out to the sponsor, SaraJo Carrico, or any of the elected officers. You won’t regret it!
