Gilmore girls is a greatly watched Netflix series with a plethora of themes. One of the main hidden themes is feminism. Feminism is probably one of the last themes people think of when they think about Gilmore girls but it actually plays a great role in the show.
The Gilmore girls and many of the other women in their small town have always dreamt big and never allowed themselves to do any less than their best. Take Lorelai and Sookie for example. Ever since they became best friends their only dream was to open their own inn together, a couple years later they found the perfect property and built and started running their own inn together. Another great example is Rory, ever since she was little she wanted to attend an Ivy league school and ever since she could have her own thoughts and dreams she wanted to be just like Christiane Amanpour, a journalist. Rory accomplished this dream by pouring out her heart and soul during high school to be the perfect straight A student that the ivy’s would admire. All the women of Stars Hollow have dreamt big and they work hard to achieve whatever they desire. This falls into the topic of feminism because it has become almost a law that only men get well paying jobs that they love while women are stuck at home playing their role as a “stay at home mom”
While Rory Gilmore did have boyfriends she also learned that nobody should depend their life on a romantic partner. When most people think of feminism they think of women tearing down and hating men, when in reality it’s women realizing their worth and becoming more independent than ever before. All of the women in Stars Hollow know their worth and never let any romantic partner take charge of their identity and goals while still being able to enjoy their life.
Gilmore girls is a show for many different people. No matter if you’re a male or female everybody can agree these women are role models for those who need help finding their worth and standing up for themselves.
