“Climate change” is two fearful words we hear a lot. Words that stir anxiety and worry in us. We have heard how scientists warn countries about reversing their increase of fossil fuels and pollution. But it looks like the leaders of our countries are not doing their job to save the planet.
“They are way off track from preventing “climate catastrophe” and scientists are sounding the alarm that time is running out to slash fossil fuels.” CNN says. Immediately this instills anxiety in me but also makes me angry. Yes it’s hard to make an immediate halt on dangerous resources that keep the world going but there won’t be a world left if we keep the track we’re on. We as individuals can do small things that add up to a large impact but we don’t have a position like powerful leaders to make a large change. We do our part and protest for change so now the ball is in the courts of the leaders on this Earth.
Recently studies show that the country leading as the main climate polluter is China. China released 14,400 tons of dangerous gasses (MtCO2e) in 2022. But don’t start accusing China of it all as we the United States are number two in the largest climate polluters as we have released 6,390 tons of dangerous gasses (MtCO2e) in 2022. Behind us follow India and the European Union.
Now per capita for each country, the United States is leading by the amount of individual people responsible for emissions. Americans contribute to climate change double that of Chinese people and even more than Indians, people from the most populated country in the world. Yes, Americans use more car transportation than any other country but that isn’t an excuse, just a reason for why.
Overall these four dominating groups caused 83% of emissions in 2022. We are greatly ahead of the rest of the countries in the world. If any of these groups responded to climate change in the slightest bit then there would be a quick enormous impact on the rest of the world, in a positive way.
Actions are being taken to help climate change but it’s not working fast enough. This isn’t just a problem to solve for the world but the problem to solve. Our planet needs help and that’s not just coming from me but some of the most intelligent scientists in the world. So do your part, even if it seems small, because it’s all you can do! Be a part of the change.
