Economy is a word we hear thrown around a lot. And even more nowadays, inflation. Topics discussed such as these may seem above our heads and unimportant. But really it affects you more than you know.
The economy is “the process by which goods and services are produced, sold, and bought” explained by Britannica. It’s the movement of money throughout the US and in the past years that money hasn’t been movin’ right. The economy hasn’t been great due to the high levels of debt, unemployment, and inflation. But whether you believe it or not, the economy currently is not too bad. It’s in fact getting better so why exactly is there so much dissatisfaction with US citizens?
If you notice, when you go to the grocery store, you might be paying over $100.00 after only picking up a few things. Grocery prices have increased by 25% because of inflation and although it is decreasing, Americans still struggle to catch up with how much they’ve been paying. And it’s not only groceries. ATTOM finds that 99% of housing in the US is unaffordable to the average income earner. The housing market has skyrocketed making it hard to buy or rent a place to live. Americans have been talking about their struggles to pay bills in recent years as well.
Now again you may ask, Why should I care? Us as high schoolers are coming up to a period in our lives where we are shifting to be independent. Going off to college some students may have the luxury of financial help from parents but some don’t. It won’t be easy going to school, paying rent, buying groceries; it all adds up. With the economy improving there is hope, but for now you should care for the economy as it determines the future of yourself and your family.
