DECA stands for, the Distributive Education Clubs of America. DECA is an international club where students can engage in business and accounting competitions to prepare them for future careers. There is an online test, and a roleplay interview with professionals or college students to participate in the competitions. Sherri Walker has sponsored the Graham High School DECA in the past years, but newly, the club is sponsored by Brooke Yowell. Some of the events to compete in within DECA include business operations, financial consulting, hospitality and tourism, selling, business finance, business management, marketing, entrepreneurship, and many more. The levels of competition are district, state, and international. This year the state competition for Texas will be in Dallas. The international competition will take place in Orlando, Florida. We interviewed Vanessa Lucio, the president of DECA the past year. We asked her what her favorite memory from DECA is and she said, ¨My favorite memory from DECA is when we go to state competitions and they have a pre-conference and usually there is a performer and every year we’ve had group performances and the vibes are really up there.¨. We also asked her what her event was and why she chose it. She said, ¨My event in DECA is financial team decision-making, and I decided to do that because I was taking an accounting class, and it just made sense.¨. DECA is a good club for students to participate in competitions to better their professionalism in the business world.
