In October, we wear pink. Our school and many others hold a pink-out pep rally to raise money for breast cancer awareness. This started in 1982 and has been going ever since. We decorate our halls, gyms, and classrooms for this event and you may wonder why. Why do we go through the trouble of making things pink when that is not our school’s colors? We do this in support and remembrance of all our students, staff, and the families affected by this devastating tragedy.
This week in our class I interviewed Mrs. McChristian to talk about her journey with breast cancer. When asked how it affected her life she said, “It made me appreciate everything more and gave me a new perspective and I am happy that I have people to care for me and I appreciate them even more now.” I then asked how she felt about our school representing this and having a pep rally she said “It’s cool because it raises awareness and shows students information and helps students open up about their own family’s journey and shines a light on how many people are actually affected by it.” We love that she stays positive and lively and shows her compassion for the people affected. She is a very strong teacher and woman and GHS is lucky to have her.
We are thankful for her story and for having a community that supports others. Way to go, GHS!
