Released on August 8, 2025, Freakier Friday both takes place and was released 22 years after the original film. Like the original, this film follows the chaotic adventures that result from people switching bodies.
This film follows two teenage girls who don’t get along but are stuck together through the upcoming marriage of their parents, only to get intertwined in a multiple-generation body swap with Anna and Tess. Anna is in love with a charming man named Eric Reyes, and through their marriage, their daughters have no choice but to tolerate each other.
This film explores themes of generation gaps, empathy, perspective, and literally living life in somebody else’s shoes. The movie has a great balance of heartfelt, chaotic, and humorous moments. I found the pacing to be solid and the film to be lacking dull moments.
I find that the teenage actresses did a good job acting like grown adults trapped in their bodies. I usually have mixed feelings on performances done by children and teenagers when they are in such a big role, but I found their characters to be likable due to strong performances by the actresses.
It was nice to see Jamie Lee Curtis in this film, as I love her as Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise. Jamie Lee Curtis reached out to Disney and Lindsay Lohan about making this film. I’m glad to see Lindsay Lohan have a successful movie again, as she hasn’t been in a film with a wide theatrical release since 2007 (besides a small cameo in the 2024 adaptation of Mean Girls). In this film, Lindsay Lohan’s character has a wedding date set for October 3rd, which I thought may have been a neat Mean Girls reference.
I was really happy when the film played “Take Me Away” by Lash. In the film, they bring back the fictional band “Pink Slip” with Anna (Lindsay Lohan), Maddie (Christina Vidal Mitchell), and Peg (Haley Hudson). Christina not only came back for the sequel, but she also recorded an updated version of the track for this movie. “Take Me Away” by Lash is one of my favorite songs, so I was excited to hear it in this film, especially with how significant it was in the original. I’m also a big Britney Spears fan, so hearing “…Baby One More Time” was cool too. I also liked hearing “Spice Up Your Life” by the Spice Girls, as it is a song I enjoy a lot.
Overall, I thought this was a good movie. I enjoyed revisiting these characters 22 years later. I didn’t have big expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised. Strong acting performances, funny scenes, and dramatic moments made this a fun watch.
