The Steers and Lady Blues cross country teams started their season on Wednesday, August 20, at the Nocona CC Relays held at Indian Oaks Golf Course. From the beginning, it was clear Graham arrived prepared to race.
Both the boys and girls teams showed resilience against tough competition. Nolan Wankowicz and Hudson Weatherman shined with impressive 6th-place finishes in their respective divisions, setting a high standard for what looks to be a competitive season. For a season opener, the energy was high, and the runners made it clear that Graham isn’t just showing up to fill a lane; they’re here to compete.
Head coaches Baylee Thompson (girls) and Quinton Fossett (boys) have worked hard with their teams all summer, and the results are already clear. From the starting gun to the final stretch, the effort put into offseason training was obvious. The hot Texas sun made conditions tough, but the Steers and Lady Blues refused to give up. Each runner pushed themselves, and the team’s resilience was evident across the course.
What makes this performance even more promising is that it’s only the beginning. With a long season ahead, Graham has already shown it can stay strong and overcome challenges. Both the boys and girls varsity squads will get another chance to show their progress this Thursday, August 27, in an all-day meet against Brownwood, running from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If Nocona was any sign, there’s plenty of excitement to come this season for Graham cross country.
