What is a speed and strength coach, and why do we need one? A speed and strength coach is defined as a coach who specializes in creating training programs to meet a team’s specific needs and improve their performance. A speed and strength coach also works to minimize injuries by targeting specific skills and muscle groups.
Enter Coach Barber: Graham’s new speed and strength coach. He has big plans for Graham High School’s athletic teams and wants to help keep all athletes available and safe. When asked why he wanted to be a speed and strength coach or if it was just something that happened, he said that, “In high school, his friend’s father was a speed and strength coach for TCU,” and that was a big inspiration for him.
Coach Barber served in the Marine Corps for five years and interned at the University of North Texas, working primarily with the football team and assisting with the Olympic sports. When asked if there was anything difficult about this time, he said, “Yes, one of the more difficult things about being an intern was the long hours and not getting paid.” He then enrolled at Texas Christian University, where he worked exclusively with the football team. At the same time, he started to work part-time at the Episcopal School of Dallas, where he coached all junior high and upper school athletes.
When asked if Coach Barber will stay in Graham and become a true Grahamite or continue moving forward, he said he plans to stay in Graham. He has found the commuity to be very welcoming and is loving Graham, America.
