Most high school students can agree–math isn’t exactly a fan-favorite when it comes to school subjects. But thanks to resident math teacher Don Sewell, it is slightly more bearable. Whether he’s guiding students through algebra or instructing them on advanced quantitative reasoning, Mr. Sewell is well known for making complex mathematical concepts approachable at Graham High School.

With over 50 years of teaching experience, Mr. Sewell has spent the last 11 years spreading math knowledge in Graham High School classrooms. His deep knowledge and easy-going attitude have earned him a reputation of patience and benevolence.
When asked what he enjoys most about teaching, Mr. Sewell said, “I love seeing that ‘aha’ moment when a student finally understands something they’ve been struggling with. That’s the most rewarding part of my job.” His classroom is a place where questions are encouraged and answered in quick succession.
What many people may not know about Mr. Sewell is that he was enlisted in the army for 32 years. When asked about his time in the military he responded, “I joined the army in 1964 while in college through advanced ROTC. I was given an honorable discharge in 1996 because of some health issues even though I wanted to stay in.” His dedication to service, both in the military and the classroom, show how committed he is to making a difference.
While math may not be every student’s favorite subject, Mr. Sewell’s consistent, approachable teaching style has helped make it more manageable for many. His presence at Graham High School adds a certain sense of experience and reliability that both students and staff alike have come to appreciate.
