It finally happened! Mavericks fans have been calling for Nico Harrison to lose his job since he traded away Luka Doncic on February 2, and now he has finally been fired from his position as general manager for the Dallas Mavericks. I actually really liked Nico Harrison up until the Luka trade. I loved his moves to acquire PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford, which really helped us gear up for our finals run, but the Luka trade, along with a few other moves, destroyed his reputation in Dallas completely, and I expect that he will never work in an NBA front office again.
Anthony Davis is an outstanding player. For the most part, he’s been healthy over the two years previous to his arrival in Dallas, but he’s played in 14 of 47 possible games. He’s still a top 10-15 player in the league, but not only has he not been on the floor, but I don’t even think he fits on this team when we’re healthy. Anthony Davis wants to play power forward because it causes less wear and tear on his body, which is understandable, as he’s an injury-prone player, but I’m not even sure about that, as he’s played in around only 30% of his possible games since the trade, which, surprise, surprise, he’s playing power forward. If the Mavericks do decide to just blow up the current team to rebuild around Cooper Flagg, I believe they should trade Anthony Davis for as many picks as possible. I don’t know what his current trade value is with his injury history, age, and contract, but we need first-round picks badly since we pretty much traded all of our future first-round picks away while still rebuilding around Luka.
I’m not sure what’s next for the Mavericks. Are we entering a rebuild around Cooper Flagg? Are we going to reload and try to compete next year with Kyrie back? Are we trading away Anthony Davis? These are all possibilities, and I’m extremely excited to see what unfolds in the upcoming months.
The 2024 Dallas Mavericks playoff run was the most fun I’ve ever had as a basketball fan. I LOVED that specific group of players, and even though they couldn’t win the finals, I was ecstatic for what was to come. I was a huge fan of their offseason moves that year, which included the acquisitions of Naji Marshall, Klay Thompson, and Quentin Grimes. I have never had higher hopes for my team than I had going into the 24-25 season, and Nico Harrison ruined it all. In what world do you assemble a team that goes to the finals and immediately trade away the guy whom you built the team around?
Nico Harrison has single-handedly made my quality of life a lot worse. The Dallas Mavericks went on their deep playoff run in the midst of my grandma’s passing, and watching them helped take my mind off things. The 2024 Dallas Mavericks team meant more to me than anyone could ever know, and Nico Harrison both created and destroyed that.
