In Graham, Texas, groups of kids riding scooters are often called scooter kids. These kids are commonly found scootering around the small town, often not obeying traffic laws. They ride through neighborhoods and parking lots, turning the town into their hangout spot.
Many people see this as a normal part of growing up in a small town, similar to riding bikes in the past. However, some residents worry about their safety, especially because they once again don’t obey traffic laws and nearly get run over.
I asked many teachers and students what they think about these children riding around town, going through the main highway, and not wearing the safety equipment required for riding scooters. Mrs. Ramirez said, “I think they need to have a safety course because they are driving around, and there should be time limits.” I also asked Mrs. Pip, and she says, “I don’t think that they should be able to drive in the dark, and they should have to do a safety course.” On the other hand the students said it didn’t matter because they didn’t affect people, but they should be careful around vehicles.
Scooters give kids freedom and something fun to do because they are not allowed to drive, but they also come with risks. Wearing protective equipment and being careful on the roads can help protect them and also the people around them.
Overall, the scooter kids of Graham show how these could become a challenge, but also help the kids be kids and not stay on phones or tablets, and actually live their lives.
