Do you think technology has recently been overused in places of education? Technology has become a ubiquitous item used in schools, not just computers, but also tablets, smartboards, and even smartphones at times. While these tools can be extremely useful for educational purposes in classrooms, some people seem to experience both ups and downs with technology usage.
A concern that many students have spoken out about is how hands-on learning is slowly going away over time. Grayson Damron says, “It doesn’t bother me, but I think it’s taking away from actually learning.” Paisley Bailey also states, “It does allow for more innovation in the learning department, but I do believe that hands-on learning would still be crucial.” Showing that some people think that, yes, it is good in ways, but many students in schools feel as if they truly do need that hands-on learning and face-to-face discussions instead of certain things being online.
Not only are students showing concern about this topic, but teachers are as well. Sara Jo Carrico, a teacher at Graham High School, says, “It’s nice to have access to everything quickly; however, I think we are becoming too independent on technology and end up struggling with our own confidence in some things.”
Yes, many teachers and students agree that the use of technology is helpful, but in some ways, it can be used to harm people, not just in terms of confidence, but also in mental health and social isolation ways. Do you think we should go back to before technology was heavily used in schools, or do you think there should be a balance between the tools of technology and traditional teaching?
