The 66th Annual Grammy’s

The 66th Annual Grammys

The Grammy’s are an exceptionally esteemed event hosted annually by varying hosts. It is televised live and anyone can tune in to watch. Nominees from all different categories gathered together in the Crypto.com Arena for the chance of receiving an award, formally known as a Grammy. The night was eventful to say the least. From unexpected winners, to celebrity drama, the Grammy’s had it all.

The evening began much before the cameras turned on. Celebrities donned their most favored apparel and accessories, ready to make a statement. If one of them were to win an award and go onstage to receive it, they would have to look their absolute best. Many even filmed tiktoks/posted on social media beforehand. They put on their best faces and hopped in their cars, ready for one of the most exciting nights of their lives. After pulling up, they were then greeted by the red carpet.

The red carpet is one of the most established items in pop culture. Practically everybody knows what it is. Being able to walk along it and have your photo taken by the paparazzi lined up is a dream of many. To see celebrities that one might idolize do something they themself might never do, can be truly amazing. Artists tread down the carpet, stunning all with their looks. Several pictures used in different articles or media outlets will come from this. So many celebrities had phenomenal outfits,  including (but not limited to) Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Ice Spice, Dua Lipa, and Coco Jones. They each had outfits that were just so them. They were able to show their dazzling personality through all of the glitz, glam, and stress of walking the red carpet. After this, they are guided into the main arena, to their designated tables.

The nominees are sometimes chosen at random to sit in specific places. However, some have more say than others, and are able to choose where exactly they want to sit. Several celebs were seen sitting next to each other and conversing, like close friends. Some were even singing and dancing along to performances with one another. But, others were sitting in awkward silence, never really breaking the ice to form a relationship with the other. From this we can definitely tell that some of the nominees are on better terms with each other than others.

This was evident when a few were caught not looking overjoyed when certain artists were announced as winner of an award. But, we’ll get to that later. For now, let’s talk about the different nominations and who was selected as winner for each one.

Here’s how the Grammy’s works: there are five finalists in each category. These categories can range from things like Album of The Year, Song of The Year, Best Alternative Artist, and many others. There is a group of select judges called the Recording Academy. They vote for who they each think should win, giving notes on each vote they make. Sometimes these notes get leaked. Several from this year’s Grammys already have been. Afterward, the winner’s name is placed inside an envelope, and a celeb who is a Grammy winner is chosen to announce the winner. It’s all very well-thought out and executed.

The different winners for each award are as follows: Record of The Year (Miley Cyrus, “Flowers”), Album of The Year (Taylor Swift, “Midnights”), Song of The Year (Billie Eilish, “What Was I Made For?”), Best New Artist (Victoria Monet), Producer of The Year (Jack Antonoff), Songwriter of The Year (Theron Thomas), Best Solo Pop Performance (Miley Cyrus, “Flowers”), Best Pop Group Performance (“Ghost In The Machine”) Best Pop Vocal Album (Taylor Swift, “Midnights”), Best Metal Performance (Metallica, “72 Seasons”), Best Rock Song (Boygenius, “Not Strong Enough”), Best Rock Album (Paramore, “This Is Why”), and many, many more which can be found listed at the official Grammy website, or at grammy.com/awards.

Now, the drama. There are several different cameras located all around the arena in order to get the best possible shots for at-home viewers. These cameras show contrasting angles of the stage, the tables, and even right in front of celebrities. With these cameras shoved in their faces, it can be difficult to truly react in a natural way. After all, it is live. But, some facial expressions still make their way through, causing watchers to speculate and gossip.

For example, during the announcement of the Album of The Year award, there was a camera placed where nominees were sitting. They wanted to be able to get every little detail. Two nominees for the award,  Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift, happened to be sitting next to each other. When the winner (Taylor Swift) was announced, the cameras immediately zoomed in on the two of them. Taylor looks at Lana, seeming to have a shocked expression on her face. She touches Lana’s face before standing up, looking at those around her. Lana has a hard to read disposition, she looks happy for Taylor, but to many it feels forced. Taylor and Lana embrace each other and lock hands. Taylor pulls Lana onstage with her. This has all led viewers to wonder just how pure Taylor’s intentions were. Did she honestly feel bad and want to share her moment? Or was she just putt’n salt on a wound? It’s up for interpretation.

Similar to a situation Taylor Swift herself went through years ago, Jay Z, rap artist, made a speech eerily similar to that of Kanye’s when Taylor won an award at the VMAs in 2009. Both men argued that Beyonce and many other black artists had never won an award like this before, despite their great work. Several are extremely upset about this situation, and wonder why he felt the need to say that.

In short, the night of the Grammy’s was wild, littered with drama, amazing outfits, awards, and much more.
