Each year on November 11, Americans pause to honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is a time to recognize their courage, sacrifices, and dedication to protecting our nation’s freedom.
The holiday began as Armistice Day in 1919, marking the end of World War 1. The armistice, or peace agreement, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans, not just those from World War 1.
Across the country, people celebrate by attending parades, visiting memorials, and thanking veterans in their communities. At Graham High School, students and staff are encouraged to take time to thank the staff who are our veterans at our school.
Veterans Day reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy every day were secured by people willing to put others before themselves. Whether by attending a ceremony or simply saying thank you, showing gratitude makes a difference.
