The Principals’ Advisory Council is a group of students who meet once a month with Mr.Anderson to discuss issues that concern the student body. Once a month, an article will be posted to keep students up to date on what is talked about in these meetings. This month, they met on January 12th, and the three main topics discussed were the possibility of seniors getting to paint parking spots next year, WIN being in the middle of the day with a possibility of a home room teacher, Sophomores possibly leaving for lunch next year, and the schedule for next year and going back to a ‘normal’ weekly schedule.
The possibility of seniors being able to paint parking spots next year was discussed during this meeting. One of the main topics over this was how much the school would charge for it. The prices that other schools charge were brought up, and it was suggested that we stay in the middle since some schools charge from $50 to $200. It was said that 75 to 100 would probably be a better price range for Graham. This would not be mandatory, and any parking spots that were not bought would possibly be painted white so seniors that didn’t want to pay didn’t have to.
WIN has been an issue of contention all school year. Middle of the day WIN next year was brought up as a possibility, along with a home room teacher. There were lots of things discussed with this topic, and it is also an idea that will be discussed more in depth at a later date. The way WIN is currently handled has yielded negative input from both students and teachers, teachers feeling like they can’t properly help students, and students feeling like they’re not getting the help they need.
The possibility of off campus sophomores lunch next year was talked about a little, and it would not be an all year thing. It was said that it would more likely be only for the second semester and not the first. Obviously, this would lead to a crackdown on sophomores skipping lunch during the first semester of the year.
Finally, the going back to a ‘normal’ schedule next year was discussed at length. This does not mean that we’d be going back to 5-day weeks. A hybrid school week is described by the state of Texas as a certain number of Fridays off. So, having the amount of Fridays off that we have now that leads to us not being able to have half days and having to ask the state for leniency on minutes. So the way we would remedy this is having fewer Fridays off. This is executed by replacing the Fridays off with Mondays off that appeases the state and gives us more leniency.
