Valentine’s Day is a couple’s favorite holiday and a lonely person’s worst nightmare. But have you ever wondered where it all originated? It started in ancient Rome at the Lupercalia festival. This festival takes place annually on February 15th, celebrating health and fertility. It is also to purify the city. However, in the 5th century, the current Pope (Pope Gelasius) changed the holiday to a Christian festival celebrating Saint Valentine. The traditions for Valentine’s Day haven’t always been the way they are. Around the 15th century, everyone started to associate this day with love; poets were the main reason behind this. Around the mid 1800s, the act of giving loved ones cards became widespread in England. During this time, chocolates, flowers, and hearts also became very popular. Valentine’s Day spread throughout the world around the 20th century, reaching places like Asia and Latin America.
