Graham High School is considering a significant shift in its hallway policies with the potential introduction of a new hall pass rule. This proposed change would require students to wear designated lanyards indicating their intended destination, such as a restroom pass. However, there is growing concern among students and staff about the implications of such a rule. In this article, we will explore the reasons why this rule should not be enforced. The first reason this rule shouldn’t be implemented is that it is unsanitary. If a kid goes to the restroom and comes back, you have no idea what happened; they could have dropped it in the toilet or urinal, or worse. On top of that, lanyards can slip off easily, which makes it even more concerning. Breaking off from the fact that lanyards can be unsanitary, they can also be stolen, causing trouble for teachers. If some kid that doesn’t care for consequences sees a lanyard and thinks it’s pretty or wants to get back at that teacher, they’ll snatch it. This would be a waste of money and time, as it would require replacing the lanyards every time they are stolen. Having hall passes also won’t stop kids from wandering around the school. If someone asked them where they were heading, they could just show the pass and continue on their merry way. Carson, a senior, had some words to say about it. He said, “I just think it’s disgusting, not knowing if kids wash their hands or not,”. When asked, many sophomores said they think it’s unsanitary and a waste of time. But as it stands, the decision to add the new hall pass rule is still ineffective, so don’t get your hopes up.
